Spring Dress Up Days Wednesday
We will be doing a read-a-thon on Wednesday. Students may bring a blanket to school if they would like. We will also be doing our Iditarod celebration. If your student will be absent or leaving early on Wednesday, if you could email me to let me know I would greatly appreciate it! It will help me better prepare for the day. Link Up On May 14 all 4th grade students will be traveling to Muskegon for the symphony. They will join the symphony by playing their recorders. After we leave Muskegon, we will be eating lunch at Pizza Ranch. Students need $6.00 for Pizza Ranch. You can send this in at any time. For this trip we will not need chaperones. I know it is a ways out, but I wanted make you aware of it now. More information will be coming home as the date of this trip approaches. 5/6 Building Orientation Opportunities Please read the message from Mrs. McClure: Hello incoming fifth grade students and families. The 5/6 Building @ Georgetown is excited to welcome our new fifth grade students for the 24-25 school year! To help with this transition, we are planning two orientation/tour evenings for students and their parents/guardians on Monday, April 22 and Monday, April 29. On these evenings, we will have three different time slots starting at 6:00, 6:30, and 7:00. During these orientations, we will give an overview of what fifth grade will look like at 56G and then provide families with tours of the building. To help answer some questions that you may have at this time, check out this short presentation about fifth grade at 56G. Last Update This will be the last update from me until I return on May 13. Ms.T will update you, but probably through email. She will be sending an introductory letter this week, which will include her email. Field Trip Friday, March 22 is our field trip. We will be leaving in the morning and returning around 2:00. Please send in $6.00 by Tuesday, March 19. Students and chaperones will need a sack lunch packed and comfortable walking shoes. Please watch the weather and dress appropriately as we will be outside. Chaperones, we will plan on meeting you there at 9:30. Please remember to send in $6.00 as well. Please also remember because this is a school event, students need to ride and from the field trip on the bus. We are looking forward to a great trip! We will be learning from different characters' perspectives, identifying shifts in power and how that impacts the story, and identifying themes across text. Writing - We will be finalizing our nonfiction books and will be sharing them. Math - We will be looking at fractions of a different size whole, finding equivalent fractions by multiplying and dividing, and comparing fractions with uncommon denimators. Social Studies/Science - We will be taking break from switching until after spring break. For the next couple of weeks we will be doing a few M-STEP reviews to prepare for M-STEP. Word Study - We will be working on R controlled vowel words. SEL - In this unit, students will focus on conflict resolution. Students will apply their understanding of conflict to the RULER tool, the Blueprint Reflection. The Blueprint Reflection is a set a questions designed to help reflect on conflict and build empathy. Students will use the Blueprint Reflection to consider the perspective of the other person or people during a conflict. As students increase their capacity for empathy, they will reflect on the importance of empathy for maintaining their classroom’s emotional climate. I have said this all year to people who ask how the year is going, I am so blessed by the students I get to teach this year and the parents I get to partner with! Thank you for your support, encouragement, and partnership! One School One Book Our One School, One Book should have come home with student yesterday along with a reading calendar. It is a fun way to read together as family. There is a QR code to listen to the book as well. We will be doing activities this month that relate to this enjoyable book. As you read this book as a family, it can count as part of your student's required 120 mintues. Iditarod We have begun learning about the Iditarod, which is a dogsled race that takes place in Alaska every March. Yesterday students selected a musher he/she will be tracking throughout the duration of the race. The website is www.iditarod.com if you and your student want to keep tabs on the race at home. Outdoor Discovery Center Field Trip Please see the attached form in regard to our field trip. Please remember if you are interested in helping chaperone this trip to email me by this coming Friday. I currently have Krysta Cousino, Nichole Dykstra, Kendra Molette, Jonie Emelander, and Leah Gale interested. We are allowed to take seven chaperones. If there are more than seven interested, we will do a random drawing. I will email Friday by 3:30 who will be chaperoning the field trip. By Monday most everyone will be in their second book. We will be working on the significance of the minor characters, research the historical event to deepen understanding, and synthesize universal themes across books. Writing - Students will write conclusions for their books, draft glossaries, and begin typing their nonfiction books. Math - Students will be multiplying fractions by a whole number and reviewing the fraction concepts we have worked on so far. The math test will be on Friday. Science - Mr. Wiebenga will be finishing the unit on the rock cycle, layers of the earth, and weathering/erosion. A study guide will be coming home Tuesday. The test will be Thursday. Word Study - Students will be working with digraphs this week. SEL - In this unit, students will explore emotion regulation strategies and focus on identifying their best self. Best self is our ideal version of ourselves. Our best self helps us choose emotion regulation strategies, so we can make decisions we feel good about. Students will also be introduced to the RULER tool, the Meta-Moment. The Meta-Moment tool helps us act more like our best self even when we feel intense feelings. As students have more opportunities to recognize their best self and practice taking a Meta-Moment they can begin to build these tools into their daily lives. Writing - Students will draft the chronological order chapter of their nonfiction book, utilize elaboration strategies, and draft introductions. Math - Students will work to change fractions greater than one to a mixed number, mixed numbers to a fraction, and add/subtracting mixed numbers with common denominators. Science - Mr. Wiebenga will continue working with our class on weathering, erosion, and fossiles. SEL - In this unit, students will explore emotion regulation strategies and focus on identifying their best self. Best self is our ideal version of ourselves. Specials this Week Monday - STEAM Tuesday - PE Wednesday - Music Thursday - Music Mentor for all three classes Friday - STEAM Curriculum Connection Reading - Students are continuing to work on strategies to help discuss their historical fiction books. We will be looking at themes throughout the book, identifying significant events that happened, and symbolism. Writing - Students will begin drafting their descriptive chapters to their nonfiction chapter books by utilizing webs to help organize the information, writing with precise language so the content can be effectively shared, and include a nonfiction feature to the chapter. Math - Students will begin the first of two fraction units. They will identify unit fractions, the parts of fractions, writing sums of unit fractions, multiplying whole numbers by unit fractions, and adding/subtracting fractions with common denominators. Science - I was incorrect in my last blog update. Mr. Wiebenga is coming to our classroom to teach the students about fossils, erosion, weathering, and layers of the earth. Grammar - Students will continue to identify run on sentences. They will then work to edit personal writing for run on sentences and using capital letters correctly. Parent Teacher Conferences

Writing: Students will be sharing their literary essays on Monday. They will then do their opinion on demand. This will be the assessment used to score the opinion writing standards on the report card. Math: We will be working with factors, prime and composite numbers, and factors and multiples. Our Unit 4 Form A test will be on Friday. Please continue to keep working with your student on SNAP math. We made sure everyone who still has a plan was all set to get back at it after our crazy snow day weeks. Social Studies: We will be finishing our unit on Human Geography. A review sheet should come home Wednesday. There will also be a review activity in their google classroom that can used to review. The test will be on Friday. Grammar: We will be working on common and proper nouns. Most students know what these are, but we are going to be working on correctly capitalizing our words only when they need to be. Report Cards Reports will be going home in backpacks on Friday, February 2. Health Videos The district has changed when we show the health videos due to many students needing to know this information a little earlier in the year. Please read through the attached letter for more information. There are links to the videos so you can preview them prior to your student viewing them. Social Studies: Students will continue to learn about migration throughout the United States. They will identify who migrated, where they migrated from and to, and why they migrated. Word Study: Students will be working with various prefixes. SEL: Our SEL word lessons were postponed to this coming week due to snow days and 2 hour delays. Please be sure to communicate with your student if a sack lunch needs to be ordered. Historical Fiction Book Clubs In two weeks we will be starting our historical fiction book clubs. This is a really fun unit for the kids. They will be learning how to discuss their books not just share ideas they have. Please read the following letter so you know to expect and also the book options there may be for your student. Musical Opportunity Please see this opportunity in regard to the high school musical this year. I have also sent it through email. Class Charter We revisited our charter. The class decided to change out the words. Please see our newly revised charter below. Specials Monday - Art Tuesday - STEAM Wednesday - PE Thursday - Music Friday - Recess (early release) Curriculum Connection Reading - Students will finish their google slide presentations and present their information. Writing - Students will be writing the body paragraphs of their literary essays. They will learn how to include direct quotes from the passages to use as support. Math - Students will learning strategies to help solve comparison word problems in math. Social Studies - Students will be reading various historical fiction books to identify what pushed people to move away from certain places and what pulled them to the new place. SEL - We will be working with the emotion word Optimistic. We will learn what it means and strategies to either stay or shift to feeling optimistic. Word Study - We will be work with prefixes this week. |
